Main Characters
Eren Yeager
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji (Japanese), Bryce Papenbrook[1] (English) The protagonist of the series. Idealistic, hotheaded, aggressive, and impulsive, Eren seeks to annihilate all Titans and explore the outside world beyond the walls. When he was 9 years old, he and his doctor father came across the bodies of Mikasa Ackerman's parents, having been murdered by slave traffickers. Alone, Eren tracked down Mikasa and killed two of her captors before convincing her to kill the third to survive while he was being strangled by the latter. Following his mother's death, Eren has a brief encounter with his father who entrusts him with a key to the basement of their house in Shiganshina, claiming that he must reach it by whatever means necessary, though it isn't revealed what is actually hidden there. He was ranked 5th in his trainee class, possessing no particular talent aside from his close combat skills. However, his resolve, determination, and sense of purpose ensured a steady improvement in his grades. It is later revealed that Eren possesses the ability to transform into a 15 meter class Titan. Eren believes this ability to be the result of injections given to him by his father after the death of his mother. He initially had little control over his Titan body, attacking whatever came into his view, but after physical and mental training he eventually gained full control. When the Titan's body can no longer be maintained, Eren emerges from the nape of the Titan's neck (the common weak point of all Titans), where his body is fused to the Titan. When encountering the Titan that devoured his mother years earlier during his kidnapping by Reiner and Bertolt, Eren suddenly develops a new ability to mentally control other Titans. After first subconsciously directing a group to kill and devour the Titan that killed his mother, he then directs the Titans to attack the Armored Titan so he and his friends can escape back to within the Walls. After being rescued, Eren is sent with his friends to an isolated village while preparations are made for a campaign to retake Wall Maria for good, by making use of his newfound power. Author Hajime Isayama stated that Eren's Titan form's physique was modeled after middleweight mixed martial artist Yushin Okami. |

Mikasa Ackerman
Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa (Japanese), Trina Nishimura (English) Adopted child of the Yeager family. Mikasa is the last known person of Asian descent living within the Walls. She is a quiet and withdrawn girl and maintains a near constant stoic expression, except when Eren is in danger. When Mikasa's parents are killed by the slavers, she goes into shock until Eren saves her and motivates her to fight to live. Due to this incident, and her subsequent adoption into the Yeager family, she is very protective of Eren and will follow and protect him no matter the circumstances. Although as the story progresses, it appears that the family kinship she feels for Eren is much deeper than what she claims. The only reason she joins the military is because of Eren and, while she is hardly thrilled to become a soldier, she is ranked first in her graduating class; considered to be an unprecedented genius and prodigy. She is often teased about her attachment to her foster brother. Mikasa is named after the Mikasa, a battleship from the Imperial Japanese Navy. |
Armin Arlert
Voiced by: Marina Inoue (Japanese), Josh Grelle (English) Childhood friend of Eren and Mikasa. He is physically frail and relatively intrepid but possesses a sharp mind and a natural intuition for strategy which has proven useful on many an occasion. However, he often believes himself to be completely incompetent and hates himself for having to rely on his friends all the time. While Mikasa always fears for Eren's life, Eren worries for Armin's safety whenever they are in battle. Despite his self-perceived shortcomings, Armin was the one to bring Eren out of his feral Titan state following his second full transformation and after he attacked Mikasa. Armin also convinced Eren to let go of his inhibitions regarding Annie so that he could transform and fight her in his Titan state. By soldier's standards, Armin has sub-par physical aptitude but excels in theoretical courses. It is Mikasa who first encourages Armin out of his belief of being incompetent by pointing out that his strategic intuitions have always saved her and Eren in the past and that he should have more faith in himself. As the story progresses his confidence blooms and his brilliant planning, tactics and deduction impresses high ranking officers to the point that they respect his opinions considerably. It is solely through Armin's intellect and deductive skills that the (human) identity of the Female Titan is discovered. |
